A Modern Romanticism

Today, we live in a situation comparable to the great periods of upheaval in the past that saw the birth of Romanticism in the 18th century. The world is marked by instabilities and by an ecological disruption that shakes our most fundamental points of reference.

At the heart of this troubled time, Florence Tusseau’s art embodies a modern Romanticism.

Her works are born from reality. This reality is reworked, reinvented, until it becomes something else. In this process emerge forms that did not exist before, presences arising from the realm of imagination.

Her paintings then abolish the boundaries between reality and imagination.
They do not separate the tangible from the dreamlike, the visible from the invisible, the finite from the infinite: they hold them together.
Reality is amplified there, charged with a new intensity, as if every detail of the world carried within it a promise of infinity.

Florence Tusseau’s painting is a breath in an uncertain world. It restores to the world its poetic depth and opens the gaze towards the dream.
In every detail, her works reveal an unsuspected depth, as if the world always contained more than it lets appear.
They awaken a finer sensitivity, a capacity to be moved before the ordinary transfigured into the poetic. They restore, through beauty, an intimate confidence in life.

Through their contemplative power, Florence Tusseau’s works offer the viewer the certainty that, even in the heart of uncertainty, the world remains traversed with meaning, inhabited by the infinite and open to the dream.

“By giving the common a lofty meaning, the everyday a mysterious aspect, the known the dignity of the unknown, the finite the appearance of the infinite, I romanticize.”
— Novalis, Fragmente und Studien, 1798
